Entrepreneurs’ Networking Styles and Normative Underpinnings during Institutional Transition

Abstract Existing network research has mainly adopted functional and/or structural approaches to study the instrumental goals behind entrepreneurs’ networking as well influence of personal position on access resources and eventual performance. The variety styles their normative underpinnings have not been adequately explored. Contextualized in China, this asks: How do understandings social norms shape styles? Through an inductive comparison two entrepreneur generations we identify three styles: guanxi -oriented networking, market-based mixed networking. We theorize that types these market-inferred norms, dyadically formed identity-induced norms. This provides new insights into understanding Chinese distinctive underpinnings. Further, it suggests implications both for wider behaviors transition economies, practitioners wishing enhance building China.
